Saved an .avif from a website or phone? Turn it into a JPG that every program understands.

AVIF is the newest image format on the web, built on the AV1 video codec, and more sites serve it every month. Browsers show it fine, but once you save one, plenty of software stalls: older photo viewers, office suites, print services, some editors and most upload forms. This page decodes AVIF files on your device and writes standard JPGs, in bulk if you like, so the picture works anywhere. Nothing is uploaded.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

    1. Drop the .avif files here. Files saved from websites often have the right extension; we check the contents anyway.
    2. Keep quality at 90 for anything you will print or edit, 80 for sharing. Choose a background colour if any images have transparent parts.
    3. Convert, then download the JPGs one by one or as a ZIP.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

AVIF is roughly twice as efficient as JPG for photos, so the JPG will almost always be larger than the AVIF it came from, often by a lot. That is the price of compatibility, not a sign that something went wrong. Quality 90 keeps the image visually identical; lower values bring the size down.

AVIF can hold HDR and wide-gamut colour; the JPG is a standard 8-bit, standard-range image. Transparent areas, which AVIF supports, are filled with your background colour. If your browser can’t read AVIF itself, a decoder loads once before the first file.

AVIF AVIF stores pictures compressed with the AV1 video codec in a HEIF container. The Alliance for Open Media published it in 2019. It usually beats WebP and JPG on size at the same quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and works in all current major browsers.

JPG JPG is the lossy photo format standardised in 1992 as ITU-T T.81. It throws away detail the eye barely notices, and the quality setting decides how much. It has no transparency and no animation, but every phone, computer, browser, printer and upload form opens it.

    Without this site

On Windows 11, the Photos app opens AVIF once the free AV1 Video Extension is installed from the Microsoft Store, but getting a JPG copy out of it is clumsy, one photo at a time. On a Mac running macOS Ventura or later, open the AVIF in Preview and use File › Export with Format › JPEG. iPhones on iOS 16 and later display AVIF in Safari and Photos, but have no simple way to export a JPG copy.

    Troubleshooting

    • The JPG is much larger. Expected, since AVIF is far more efficient. Use quality 75–80 or a max size if that matters.
    • Colours look duller. HDR or wide-colour AVIFs are mapped to standard range. That is a limit of JPG itself.
    • Animated AVIF. You get one frame. Animated AVIF sequences are uncommon but exist on some sites.
    • Very slow on an old phone. The AVIF decoder runs on your CPU. Convert in smaller batches.

    Questions and answers

How do I open an AVIF file?

Any current browser opens it: drag the file into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. On Windows 11, the Photos app can open AVIF after you install the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store; on a Mac, Preview opens it from macOS Ventura onwards. For apps that still can’t, convert it to JPG here.

Why is the JPG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF uses a modern video codec that stores photos in roughly half the bytes of a JPG at similar quality, sometimes less. Converting to JPG gives you compatibility, and the bytes are what it costs. Lower the quality to 75–80 or set a max size to bring the JPG down.

    Is AVIF better than JPG?

Technically yes: smaller files, transparency, HDR and wide colour. Practically, JPG still opens in more places, and AVIF is slower to encode. For a website AVIF is an excellent choice; for sending, printing or uploading to forms, JPG is still the format that just works.

Can I convert AVIF to JPG on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on the phone, tap the box, choose the AVIF files and convert. Everything runs on the phone itself, so it works for private pictures too. Older phones decode AVIF more slowly; batches of ten or twenty go smoothly.
