Turn animated GIFs into small MP4 videos that post anywhere video is accepted.
Some places accept video but not GIFs, or limit GIF sizes: story and reel uploads, presentation software, video editors, ad platforms, many messengers that turn GIFs into videos anyway. An MP4 of the same animation is usually much smaller than the GIF and looks cleaner, because video compression handles motion far better than GIF’s 256-colour frames. This converter decodes every GIF frame with its original timing and encodes H.264 MP4 in your browser. No settings to fiddle with, nothing uploaded.
How to convert GIF to MP4
- Add one or more animated GIFs.
- There are no settings: frame timing, size and order come from the GIF itself.
- Convert and download the MP4s (or a WebM if your browser can’t make H.264; the page tells you).
What happens to quality, size and metadata
Each frame is composited exactly as a browser shows it (including GIF disposal rules), then encoded as H.264 Constrained Baseline, the most compatible MP4 profile. GIFs have only 256 colours, so the MP4 can’t add quality, but it reproduces the frames closely at a fraction of the size. Frame delays are kept; delays under 20 ms are treated as 100 ms, as browsers do. Video needs even dimensions, so a GIF of odd width or height gains one pixel, and transparent areas become white, because H.264 has no transparency. An MP4 plays once by default; most platforms loop short videos automatically.

GIF GIF dates from 1987 (CompuServe); the 1989 version added animation timing and transparency. Each frame is limited to 256 colours from a palette, which is why video turned into GIF looks grainy and gets large. It still plays everywhere without a player.
MP4 MP4 is a container defined in ISO/IEC 14496-14. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, plus chapters and metadata. It is the most widely supported video file: phones, browsers, TVs and social apps all play it.

Without this site
Windows 11: Clipchamp imports GIF files; place it on the timeline and use Export to save an MP4. iPhone and Mac have no built-in GIF to MP4 option, and iMovie treats an imported GIF as a still picture, not an animation. Android has no built-in GIF to MP4 converter either, so a browser tool like this one or a desktop editor is the usual route.
Troubleshooting
- I got a WebM instead of an MP4. Your browser can’t encode H.264 (some Firefox builds). WebM plays in browsers and most apps; for MP4, use Chrome, Edge or Safari.
- Transparent background turned white. H.264 can’t store transparency. If you need it, keep the GIF.
- The MP4 doesn’t loop. Video files play once unless the player loops them. Platforms with short videos usually do; in presentations, set the video to loop.
- Very fast GIF plays slower. GIFs with near-zero frame delays are shown at 10 fps by browsers too, so the MP4 matches what you saw.
Questions and answers
How do I convert a GIF to MP4?
Add the GIF on this page and press Convert. Every frame is decoded with its timing and encoded into an H.264 MP4, ready to download in a few seconds. It works for many GIFs at once and the files are never uploaded.
Why convert GIF to MP4?
Size and compatibility. An MP4 of the same animation is often several times smaller than the GIF, loads faster and looks cleaner. Many apps and platforms accept video but not GIFs, or convert GIFs to video anyway. MP4 also works in presentations and video editors.
Will the MP4 loop like the GIF?
The file plays once; looping is decided by the player. Social platforms and messengers usually loop short videos automatically, and presentation software and web pages can be set to loop. If the animation must loop everywhere without settings, keep the GIF.
How do I post a GIF where only videos are allowed?
Convert it to MP4 here, then upload the MP4 like any other video. Some platforms need a minimum length of a few seconds; if your GIF is shorter, play it twice in a video editor or choose a longer GIF.
