Saved a web image that your editor won’t open? Turn WEBP into PNG, transparency included.
Most websites now serve images as WEBP, so “Save image as” hands you a .webp file that older editors, office apps and some upload forms reject. PNG is the safe fallback: every program reads it and, like WEBP, it supports transparency, so logos, stickers and cut-out product shots keep their see-through background. Drop as many files as you like; they are converted by your browser on your device and come back as PNGs or one ZIP.
How to convert WEBP to PNG
- Drop the .webp files here, or pick them from your Downloads folder.
- Leave the max size off to keep the original dimensions; set one only if the PNGs are meant for a smaller slot.
- Convert, then save the PNGs or grab them all in one ZIP.
What happens to quality, size and metadata
PNG is lossless, so the conversion adds no new damage: the PNG shows exactly what the WEBP showed, transparent pixels included. It cannot improve a lossy WEBP, though. If the original was compressed hard, those soft edges and blocks are faithfully copied.
The usual surprise is size. A WEBP photo is very compact; the same pixels stored losslessly can be ten or more times larger. For logos, icons and screenshots the gap is much smaller. Metadata is rarely present in web WEBPs, and PNG output here carries none.

WEBP WebP is an image format Google released in 2010, documented as RFC 9649. It has a lossy and a lossless mode, transparency and animation, and is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. Websites use it heavily, but some desktop apps and upload forms still refuse it.
PNG PNG is a lossless image format published by the W3C in 1996 and later as ISO/IEC 15948. Every pixel is kept exactly, and it supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and text. Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

Without this site
On Windows 11, Paint opens WEBP files: open the image, then File › Save as › PNG picture. The Photos app can open them too.
On a Mac, open the WEBP in Preview and choose File › Export, then Format › PNG. Preview handles one file at a time unless you select several in its sidebar first.
On a phone, an online page like this one is the easiest option; both Safari and Chrome read WEBP.
Troubleshooting
- Animated WEBP. Only the first frame is converted, because PNG holds a single still image. For animation, a GIF or video converter is the tool.
- The PNG is huge. Normal for photos. If you don’t need transparency or lossless quality, WEBP to JPG makes far smaller files.
- The file says .webp but isn’t. We read the real format from the file’s contents, so a mislabelled JPG or PNG still converts.
- Blurry result. The PNG can only be as sharp as the WEBP you saved. Some sites serve a small preview; open the full-size image before saving it.
Questions and answers
How do I convert WEBP to PNG?
Drop the WEBP files into the box at the top of this page and press Convert. Each file is decoded by your browser and written as a PNG, keeping its size and any transparency. Download the PNGs one by one, or all together as a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no limit on how many you convert.
Does WEBP to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. Both formats store an alpha channel, and the PNG keeps every transparent and semi-transparent pixel exactly. That makes PNG the right target for logos, icons and stickers. If you convert to JPG instead, transparent areas are filled with a solid colour.
Why do websites use WEBP instead of PNG?
WEBP makes smaller files: lossy WEBP photos are usually a quarter to a third smaller than JPGs, and lossless WEBP beats PNG too. Smaller images load faster, so most sites and content platforms serve WEBP to browsers that support it. The downside shows up only when you save the image and try to use it elsewhere.
Can I convert WEBP to PNG in bulk?
Yes. Select or drop as many WEBP files as you want; they are processed in parallel, using several CPU cores where your device has them. When they are done, “Download all” packs them into one ZIP. Very large batches work too, they simply take a bit longer on a phone.
