Make lossless PNG copies of JPG photos for editing, design tools or forms that only accept PNG.
People convert JPG to PNG for three honest reasons: an upload form or app insists on PNG, the image is about to be edited many times and shouldn’t lose more quality with each save, or a design tool works better with PNG. This page converts any number of JPGs in your browser. One thing it can’t do, and no converter can, is make a JPG sharper or give it a transparent background: the PNG is an exact copy of what the JPG already shows.
How to convert JPG to PNG
- Drop the JPG or JPEG files here; both extensions are the same format.
- Leave the max size empty to keep the original dimensions, or set one if the destination wants a smaller image.
- Convert and download the PNGs separately or as a ZIP.
What happens to quality, size and metadata
Pixel for pixel, the PNG matches the decoded JPG, so no further quality is lost and later edits won’t pile up compression artefacts. Existing JPG artefacts stay, of course. Expect the file to grow several times over, because PNG stores the photo’s fine grain losslessly; how much depends on the photo and its resolution.
Photos taken sideways are rotated upright before saving, since PNG has no orientation tag. PNG output from this tool carries no EXIF, so the date taken, camera model and GPS location are all left out.

JPG JPG is the lossy photo format standardised in 1992 as ITU-T T.81. It throws away detail the eye barely notices, and the quality setting decides how much. It has no transparency and no animation, but every phone, computer, browser, printer and upload form opens it.
PNG PNG is a lossless image format published by the W3C in 1996 and later as ISO/IEC 15948. Every pixel is kept exactly, and it supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and text. Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

Without this site
On Windows 11, open the JPG in Paint and use File › Save as › PNG picture. On a Mac, Preview does it with File › Export and Format › PNG, and Finder’s right-click Quick Actions › Convert Image can convert several files at once.
On Android and iPhone there is no built-in “save as PNG”. A browser page like this one works on both without installing anything.
Troubleshooting
- The background isn’t transparent. Converting doesn’t remove anything: a white background stays white. Background removal is an editing job.
- Size limit on the form. A PNG photo may be several MB. If the form also has a size limit, lower the max size or check whether it accepts JPG after all.
- Quality didn’t improve. PNG preserves, it doesn’t restore. Start from the best JPG you have.
- Lost photo date. PNG output has no EXIF. Keep the JPG if you need the date taken.
Questions and answers
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG’s pixels, including any blockiness the JPG already had. What PNG does give you is protection from further loss: you can edit and save it many times without the image degrading, which is not true for a JPG that gets re-saved.
Can I make a JPG background transparent by converting it to PNG?
Not by converting alone. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts out fully opaque with the same background. Once it is a PNG, you can erase the background in an image editor and the transparency will be saved. Converting first is still a useful step, because erasing in a JPG isn’t possible.
Why is my PNG file so large?
PNG compresses losslessly, and the fine detail of a photo can’t be squeezed much without throwing something away. A JPG photo becoming a PNG several times larger is normal. If you need a PNG but a smaller one, set a max size, for example 1600 px, which cuts the size sharply.
Is JPEG the same as JPG?
Yes. JPEG is the name of the format and JPG is the three-letter file extension from the days when Windows required three-letter extensions. Files ending in .jpg, .jpeg or .jpe are identical inside, and this page accepts all of them.
