The classic passport-style photo limit: get your picture under 50 KB, sharp enough to pass a human check.
50 KB is the most searched size limit of all, because so many application forms ask for a passport-style photo “not more than 50 KB”. A modern phone photo is 2–5 MB, so it needs to get around 50 to 100 times smaller. That is very doable for a head-and-shoulders portrait, as long as the shrinking happens in the right order. This page does it in your browser, without uploading your photo anywhere.
How to compress an image to 50 KB
- Take or pick a photo with a plain light background and crop it to head and shoulders.
- Drop it here. The target is already 50 KB; change it if your form says otherwise.
- Compress, check the reported quality and byte count, then download the JPG.
What happens to quality, size and metadata
Here is how the target is reached. First, the photo is encoded at high quality; if that fits, you are done. If not, we search between quality 95 and 30 for the best one that fits. If even 30 is too large, the image is scaled down by 15% at a time and the search repeats. At 50 KB a cropped portrait typically keeps a comfortable resolution and a decent quality setting.
50 KB means at most 50,000 bytes, which passes forms that count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes too.
Where 50 KB is asked for
Most often in Indian online applications: central and state recruitment exams, bank and insurance recruitment, railway and police recruitment, and many university and scholarship forms ask for a recent colour photo between about 20 and 50 KB. The signature usually has a separate, smaller limit. Similar limits turn up on some visa and ID portals and on college admission systems in other countries. Notices often add pixel dimensions (for example 200 × 230 px) or a white background requirement, so check the full photo specification, not just the KB number.
Tips for clear photos at small sizes
- Use a plain white or light background and even light from the front; shadows and busy backgrounds waste bytes.
- Crop to head and shoulders before compressing: fewer pixels of wall means more detail in the face.
- Use a recent photo without filters or beauty effects; many exam notices reject edited images.
Troubleshooting
- The form also fixes pixel size. Resize to the required dimensions first, then come back to compress.
- Rejected for being under 20 KB. Some forms have a minimum. Our search aims close to 50 KB, so this only happens with already-tiny images; start from the original photo.
- The photo looks sideways. We save rotation into the pixels, so it is upright everywhere; if it was wrong in the original, rotate it first.
- An iPhone HEIC. Fine: it is converted to JPG in the same step.
Questions and answers
How do I compress a photo to 50 KB for an online form?
Crop the photo to what the form needs (usually head and shoulders), drop it on this page, and press Compress with the target at 50 KB. You get a JPG just under 50,000 bytes, with the quality and dimensions shown. Download it and upload it to the form.
Will my photo be blurry at 50 KB?
Not if it is cropped well. A head-and-shoulders portrait at 50 KB can stay clear and detailed, because we spend the bytes on quality before reducing dimensions. A full-length photo with lots of background will look softer, so crop first, then compress.
Is it safe to upload my ID photo to a compressor?
This page doesn’t upload it at all: the compression runs in your own browser, and the photo never leaves your device. The GPS location from your phone is also removed by default, so the file you upload to the form carries no location data.
