The gentlest size limit: get high-resolution photos under 2 MB with quality that stays near original.

Two megabytes is a lot for a JPG, so this page mostly deals with the photos that don’t fit: 48 MP and 50 MP phone shots, DSLR images, panoramas and PNG screenshots of large displays. The search starts at a very high quality, which is enough for most of them, and only drops quality or resolution as far as it has to. Everything happens on your device, with the exact final size shown.

How to compress an image to 2 MB

    1. Drop your high-resolution photos or large PNG screenshots.
    2. Keep the 2 MB target or set the limit the site asks for.
    3. Compress and download; the report shows if any file needed resizing.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

For most photos 2 MB leaves room for a very high JPG quality at full resolution. The exceptions are big sensors: a 48 MP image carries four times the pixels of a 12 MP one, and if it has lots of fine texture (foliage, gravel, crowds) we may lower quality or scale it slightly.

Output is JPG at or below 2,000,000 bytes, which satisfies both ways of counting megabytes. PNG screenshots become JPGs too; if you need them sharp to the last pixel, keep them PNG and use the resize tool instead.

Where 2 MB is asked for

2 MB is one of the most common upload caps on the web, partly for a technical reason: many websites run on server software whose default upload limit is 2 MB, and site owners never change it. You will meet it on job portals, school and university admission systems, government service forms, forum and blog uploads, support tickets and real-estate listings. In India it is frequent on admission and recruitment portals for scanned certificates and on some state service portals.

Tips for clear photos at small sizes

    • Shoot in the camera’s standard mode rather than 48 MP or RAW when you know the destination has a 2 MB limit.
    • Keep the lens clean; haze and smudges reduce real detail while still costing bytes.
    • For a screenshot, crop to the window you need before compressing.

    Troubleshooting

    • A large PNG screenshot looks soft. JPG blurs tiny text. Crop it, or keep PNG and reduce dimensions.
    • A 48 MP photo takes a while on a phone. It is a lot of pixels; batches of five or so run smoothly.
    • The photo was already under 2 MB. It is still re-encoded to JPG. Upload the original if it already fits.
    • Transparent PNGs. Transparency becomes white in the JPG.

    Questions and answers

How do I reduce a photo to under 2 MB?

Drop it on this page with the 2 MB target and press Compress. We start at very high quality and step down only as far as needed, resizing only if quality alone can’t get there. The report shows the result, and the file is ready to download.

Why do so many sites limit uploads to 2 MB?

Often it’s simply a default: widely used web server software ships with a 2 MB upload limit, and many sites keep it. It also keeps storage and page loads manageable. For photos, 2 MB is plenty, so compressing to it costs very little visible quality.

Can I compress a 48 MP photo to 2 MB?

Yes. Large photos are handled in your browser even on phones; for images beyond the browser’s canvas limit we switch to a slower method that handles any size. Most 48 MP photos fit in 2 MB at a high quality, sometimes with a small reduction in dimensions.
