Settings

Lossless PNG copies of AVIF images, transparent backgrounds intact, made on your own device.

Choose PNG over JPG when the AVIF has a transparent background (a logo, sticker or cut-out product) or when you want to edit the image without adding another layer of compression. Design tools, presentation software and older editors that ignore AVIF all read PNG. The conversion runs in your browser; on browsers that can’t decode AVIF natively, a small decoder loads once and then works offline.

How to convert AVIF to PNG

    1. Drop the AVIF files you saved or received.
    2. Leave the max size empty to keep full resolution; set it only if the PNGs are heading somewhere with a dimension limit.
    3. Convert and save the PNGs, or download a ZIP.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

The PNG holds the AVIF’s decoded pixels exactly, so no quality is lost in this step and transparent or semi-transparent areas are preserved. Any softness from the AVIF’s own compression stays.

Be ready for a big jump in size. AVIF is the most compact common format and PNG is lossless, so photos can grow tenfold or more; graphics and logos grow far less. HDR or 10-bit AVIFs become standard 8-bit PNGs. PNG output from this tool contains no EXIF metadata.

AVIF AVIF stores pictures compressed with the AV1 video codec in a HEIF container. The Alliance for Open Media published it in 2019. It usually beats WebP and JPG on size at the same quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and works in all current major browsers.

PNG PNG is a lossless image format published by the W3C in 1996 and later as ISO/IEC 15948. Every pixel is kept exactly, and it supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and text. Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

    Without this site

On a Mac with macOS Ventura or later, open the AVIF in Preview, choose File › Export and select PNG. On Windows 11, the Photos app displays AVIF once the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed; saving a PNG copy from there is a one-photo-at-a-time affair. Phones display AVIF in the browser but rarely offer a PNG export.

    Troubleshooting

    • Huge photo PNGs. For a photo without transparency, AVIF to JPG gives a far smaller file.
    • Edges look jagged after editing. Keep working in PNG; don’t bounce between lossy formats.
    • Animated AVIF. Only one frame is kept.
    • A blank or failed result. Rare AVIF variants may not decode in every browser. Try the latest Chrome or Firefox.

    Questions and answers

Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. AVIF and PNG both store an alpha channel, and the conversion copies it exactly, including soft edges and shadows. That is the main reason to pick PNG here instead of JPG, which would fill the transparent areas with a solid colour.

Is there any quality loss converting AVIF to PNG?

None from the conversion itself: PNG is lossless and stores exactly what the AVIF decodes to. The only change is for HDR or high-bit-depth AVIFs, which become standard 8-bit images. Detail the AVIF encoder discarded originally can’t be brought back.

Why use PNG instead of keeping AVIF?

Compatibility and editing. Many design tools, office apps, older systems and upload forms still don’t accept AVIF, while PNG works everywhere. PNG is also a good working format: you can save edits repeatedly without loss. Keep AVIF for publishing on the web, where its small size helps.

Can I convert several AVIF files at once?

Yes. Drop as many as you want and they are converted in parallel on your device. When they finish, download them one at a time or as a single ZIP. There is no account, no daily cap and nothing waiting in a server queue.
