Lossless PNG copies of your iPhone photos, made locally, ready for editing or design tools.

PNG is the right target when the photo is going to be edited further: cut out in a design tool, layered into a slide, retouched or used as a texture. PNG never adds a new round of compression, so every later save starts from the exact pixels the HEIC decoded to. The cost is size, often several times the HEIC. If you just want to share or upload the picture, JPG is the better choice; if you plan to edit, start here.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

    1. Add the HEIC files from your phone, a folder or an AirDrop download.
    2. Set a max size only if the editor you use struggles with 12 MP or 48 MP images; otherwise leave it off for full resolution.
    3. Convert and download the PNGs individually or as a ZIP.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

Nothing is lost in this step: the PNG holds exactly the pixels the HEIC decodes to, at 8 bits per channel. That precision is what makes the files big. A photo PNG is often ten times the size of the HEIC or more, because PNG’s compression is built for flat graphics rather than camera noise.

There is one limit to know about. HEIC from recent iPhones can hold 10-bit HDR data; the PNG is a standard 8-bit, standard-range image. PNG files from this tool carry no EXIF, so the date taken and camera details are not inside the file. If you need them, convert to JPG instead.

HEIC HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads save by default since iOS 11. It is the HEIF container from MPEG holding pictures compressed with the HEVC video codec, so a photo takes roughly half the space of a JPG of similar quality. It can also hold depth maps, bursts and the still frame of a Live Photo.

PNG PNG is a lossless image format published by the W3C in 1996 and later as ISO/IEC 15948. Every pixel is kept exactly, and it supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and text. Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

    Without this site

On a Mac, Preview does it in a few clicks: File › Export, Format › PNG. You can select many photos in Preview’s sidebar first and export them together.

On Windows 11 with HEIF Image Extensions installed (free in the Microsoft Store; some PCs also need HEVC Video Extensions), open the photo in Paint and pick File › Save as › PNG picture. The iPhone itself has no built-in way to save a PNG copy; a browser page like this one is the simplest route on the phone.

    Troubleshooting

    • The PNG is 10× the size. That is how PNG treats photos. If you don’t need lossless, JPG at quality 90 looks the same at a fraction of the size.
    • No transparency appears. iPhone photos have no transparent areas, so the PNG is fully opaque too. Background removal is a separate step in an editor.
    • The date taken is missing. PNG output here has no EXIF. Use HEIC to JPG if your photo library sorts by date.
    • Portrait mode depth. Depth maps and other auxiliary images in the HEIC are skipped; you get the main photo.

    Questions and answers

Is PNG better than JPG for iPhone photos?

For editing, yes, because PNG never re-compresses and so cannot build up artefacts. For keeping and sharing, no: a photo PNG is many times larger than a JPG and looks the same. A good rule is PNG while you work on an image, JPG when it is finished.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG on an iPhone?

Yes, with this page in Safari. Tap the box, choose your photos, convert, then share or save the PNGs to Files. Safari reads HEIC natively, so usually nothing extra downloads, and nothing is uploaded. Very large batches of 48 MP photos may hit the phone’s memory limit; do them in groups of ten or so.

Why can’t I see the date the photo was taken?

PNG files from this converter don’t carry EXIF data, so the date taken, camera model and location are not stored. The file’s own “modified” date is the moment you downloaded it. If you need the original dates, convert to JPG, which keeps the date taken and camera make and model by default.

Does the PNG keep the full resolution?

Yes. Unless you set a max size, a 12 MP photo stays 4032 × 3024 px and a 48 MP one keeps all its pixels. On phones a 48 MP image can exceed the browser’s canvas limit; we then switch to a slower path that handles any size, so the result is the same, just later.
