Settings
Turn heavy PNGs, transparent ones included, into tiny AVIFs for modern websites.
A full-width PNG banner or a transparent product cut-out can weigh several megabytes, and that is exactly where AVIF shines: it keeps the alpha channel and stores the image in a small fraction of the space. This page encodes AVIF locally in your browser, so unreleased designs stay on your machine. Pick quality and effort, convert a batch, and drop the AVIFs into your site with the PNG as a fallback.
How to convert PNG to AVIF
- Drop the PNG files: banners, transparent product shots, illustrations.
- Keep quality around 60 for photos; for flat graphics with crisp edges, try 70–80. Choose Fast effort for big batches, Best for a few key images.
- Convert, then download the AVIFs one by one or as a ZIP.
What happens to quality, size and metadata
PNG is lossless; AVIF here is lossy, so the encoder simplifies detail you are unlikely to notice. For photographic PNGs the size drop is dramatic. For flat graphics, sharp text and pixel art the drop is smaller and low qualities can blur thin lines, so check those at 100% zoom.
Transparency is kept, soft edges included. The AVIF encoder (around 1 MB) downloads on first use and is cached. No metadata is carried over: AVIF output from this tool contains no EXIF.

PNG PNG is a lossless image format published by the W3C in 1996 and later as ISO/IEC 15948. Every pixel is kept exactly, and it supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and text. Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.
AVIF AVIF stores pictures compressed with the AV1 video codec in a HEIF container. The Alliance for Open Media published it in 2019. It usually beats WebP and JPG on size at the same quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and works in all current major browsers.

Without this site
There is no built-in way to save AVIF on Windows or macOS: Paint, Photos and Preview open AVIF files on current versions but don’t export them. Developers often use command-line encoders or a build step that converts images automatically, and many hosting platforms and image CDNs generate AVIF on the fly. For converting a set of files yourself, this page needs no installation.
Troubleshooting
- Thin lines or small text get soft. Raise quality to 75–85, or keep such images as PNG or SVG.
- Pixel art looks smeared. AVIF isn’t made for hard pixel edges. Keep pixel art as PNG.
- Encoding is slow on a phone. Use Fast effort, or convert on a computer.
- Old browsers show nothing. Serve a PNG or WEBP fallback for visitors on old Safari.
Questions and answers
Does AVIF support transparency?
Yes. AVIF has a full alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds, drop shadows and anti-aliased edges survive the conversion. That makes it a strong replacement for large transparent PNGs on websites, such as product cut-outs and banners, which is often where it saves the most bytes.
Is AVIF lossless like PNG?
AVIF can be lossless, but this converter makes lossy AVIF, because that is where the big savings are. At sensible qualities the difference from the PNG is hard to see on photos and illustrations. Keep the PNG originals in case you need exact pixels later.
Which effort setting should I use?
Fast is the default and suits most work. Balanced and Best let the encoder search longer for a more compact file: expect a smaller file from Best, but noticeably longer waits, especially on phones. Use Best for a few images that load on every page, such as a logo or hero banner.
AVIF or WEBP for transparent images?
Both support transparency. AVIF generally produces smaller files; WEBP encodes much faster and is supported on slightly older devices. For a handful of hero images go AVIF, for a large catalogue WEBP is quicker to produce, and many sites serve both.
