Enough room for a clear photo or a readable document scan, kept safely under 200 KB.

At 200 KB the challenge changes. A portrait fits easily; the harder case is a scanned certificate, mark sheet or ID card that must stay readable. This page searches for the highest JPG quality that fits under 200,000 bytes and keeps the full resolution whenever it can, which is what makes small print legible. Your documents are processed in your own browser and never uploaded.

How to compress an image to 200 KB

    1. Photograph or scan the document flat and well lit, then drop it here (JPG, PNG, HEIC, WEBP or AVIF).
    2. Leave the target at 200 KB or set the exact limit from your form.
    3. Compress, open the result to check that the text is readable, and download.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

With 200 KB the search often lands on a fairly high quality without touching the dimensions, especially for documents with lots of white paper. Detailed photos may need a modest resize. Each file’s report says what happened, for example “Quality 82, 3024×4032 px, 196,410 bytes”, so you can see whether the resolution was kept.

The limit is applied as 200,000 bytes, so it also passes forms that think of 200 KB as 204,800 bytes. Output is JPG, which every form accepts.

Where 200 KB is asked for

National entrance exams in India commonly accept a photograph and other images between about 10 KB and 200 KB, and many scholarship portals cap each supporting document around the same size. State recruitment and university admission systems use 200 KB for certificates, caste or income certificates and ID proofs. Outside India, 200 KB appears on some visa photo uploads, school registrations and older HR systems. Look for minimum sizes, pixel dimensions and background rules in the same notice before you upload.

Tips for clear photos at small sizes

    • Place documents on a dark, plain surface so the edges are clear, and photograph straight from above to avoid a skewed page.
    • Use daylight from a window instead of the flash, which leaves a glare spot.
    • Crop to the page edges before compressing; the table around it costs bytes.

    Troubleshooting

    • The text is hard to read. Crop tighter or photograph closer; more of the budget then goes to the writing.
    • The portal asks for a PDF. Use JPG to PDF with a size limit instead.
    • Multiple pages in one file. An image holds one page. Combine pages into a PDF.
    • Colours look washed out. That comes from the photo, not the compression. Retake in better light.

    Questions and answers

How do I compress a document photo to 200 KB?

Photograph the document flat in good light, crop it to the page, and drop it here with the 200 KB target. The page finds the best quality that fits and keeps the full resolution if possible. Open the result to confirm the text is readable, then download it.

Why is my image under 200 KB but still rejected?

Usually because of another rule: the format (some portals accept only JPG/JPEG), a minimum size such as 10 KB, required pixel dimensions, or the file name. Our output is a JPG under 200,000 bytes, so check the notice for dimension and naming rules.

Does compressing to 200 KB remove my photo’s location?

Yes. GPS coordinates are removed by default. The date taken is kept unless you turn it off, and it counts towards the 200 KB, which is why the byte budget is calculated after the metadata is added. Turning it off frees a few hundred bytes for the image itself.
