Get MP3 audio from almost any video file on your device: MP4 and MOV always, other formats when your browser reads them.

This is the catch-all page for video files that aren’t MP4: MKV files from a video editor or an older camera, WEBM recordings from a browser screen recorder, AVI files from an old phone, 3GP clips. It works with whatever video formats your browser itself can open. MP4 and MOV with AAC sound always work. MKV and WEBM work when the sound is AAC, Opus or Vorbis, which covers most of them. Formats and codecs the browser doesn’t know are honestly reported as unsupported. The file never leaves your device.

How to convert Video to MP3

    1. Add the video files; the page checks each one and tells you right away if your browser can’t read its sound.
    2. Choose bitrate (192 kbps default), mono or stereo, and an optional start and end time.
    3. Convert and download the MP3s, or all of them in one ZIP.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

Whatever the container, the steps are the same: read the audio track, decode it with the browser’s own decoders, encode MP3 with LAME at a constant bitrate. Opus and Vorbis in WEBM or MKV are lossy formats, so the MP3 is a second lossy generation; at 192 kbps that is rarely audible. Uncompressed PCM sound in some AVI or MKV files converts with no extra loss beyond the MP3 itself. Surround tracks are mixed to stereo. When a file has several audio tracks (MKV with two languages, for example), the main track is used. Subtitles, chapters and tags are not carried over.

MP3 MP3 is the lossy audio format standardised by MPEG in ISO/IEC 11172-3 (1993). Its patents have expired, and practically every player, car stereo, phone and editing app plays it. At 192 kbps most listeners cannot tell it from the original on typical speakers or headphones.

    Without this site

Desktop operating systems don’t include a converter for these formats. On Windows, Mac and Linux the free VLC player handles almost every container: Media › Convert / Save (File › Convert / Stream on a Mac), then choose the “Audio – MP3” profile. On a Mac, QuickTime’s File › Export As › Audio Only works only with files QuickTime can open, which excludes MKV and WEBM. Phones have no built-in option.

    Troubleshooting

    • “This browser can’t decode the audio”. The sound uses a codec your browser lacks (for example AC-3 or DTS in some MKV files). Try Chrome or Edge on a computer, which know the most codecs.
    • AVI files fail more often. AVI is an old container that browsers barely support; small AVI files may still work through the browser’s built-in decoder.
    • Wrong language track. Only the main audio track is converted. Remux the file in a video tool to pick another track first.
    • For MP4 or MOV only? MP4 to MP3 and MOV to MP3 explain the details of those formats.

    Questions and answers

Can I convert MKV or WEBM to MP3 here?

Usually yes. MKV and WEBM files with AAC, Opus or Vorbis sound convert in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If the MKV uses AC-3, E-AC-3 or DTS sound (common in film rips), most browsers can’t decode it and the page says so instead of producing a broken MP3.

Why does my AVI video not convert?

AVI predates web video, and browsers don’t read it as a container. For files up to 50 MB the converter asks the browser’s own audio decoder, which handles some AVIs; larger ones and unusual codecs fail with a clear message. Saving the video as MP4 in another app first solves it.

Which video formats can I convert to MP3?

MP4, MOV and M4V always. MKV, WEBM and 3GP in most cases, depending on the sound codec and your browser. AVI only sometimes. The rule is simple: if your browser can decode the audio in the file, we can turn it into MP3, and we tell you when it can’t.

Is it safe to convert a private video to MP3 online?

On this page the video isn’t sent anywhere. The converter is downloaded to your browser once and then works locally: you can even switch on airplane mode after the page loads. That matters for family videos, recorded calls and work meetings.
