Settings
The smallest common form limit: a signature or thumbnail under 10,000 bytes, checked before you upload.
Ten kilobytes is about 0.2% of a typical phone photo, so reaching it is less about compression settings and more about pixels. A signature, a thumb impression or a small ID-style face picture can fit; a full scene cannot stay sharp. This page searches for the best JPG quality under 10,000 bytes and then reduces dimensions until the file fits. Expect a portrait of roughly 200–300 px wide at this size. Everything happens in your browser.
How to compress an image to 10 KB
- Crop the image to the bare signature or face first; at 10 KB every centimetre of blank paper costs detail.
- Drop it here with the target at 10 KB and switch off “Keep date taken”, which frees a few hundred bytes for the picture.
- Press Compress, read the pixel size in the result, zoom in to check the strokes, then download.
What happens to quality, size and metadata
At this budget the quality search (95 down to 30) almost never succeeds on a full-size photo, so the engine moves on to dimensions: it scales the image down by 15% at a time and searches quality again at each step. The result is the largest image that still fits, which is why a tight crop matters more here than on any other size.
The file never exceeds 10,000 bytes, so it passes forms that count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes as well. Output is JPG; a transparent PNG background turns white, and the GPS location is removed.
Where 10 KB is asked for
The 10 KB figure usually appears as the lower or upper end of a signature rule. Indian recruitment and entrance-exam portals often specify the signature as 10–20 KB, and some older systems cap the signature, the left-thumb impression or a handwritten declaration at exactly 10 KB. A few state-level application forms, cooperative bank recruitments and school board registrations still use 10 KB for the photo too, a leftover from systems built years ago. Outside India, 10 KB limits show up for profile pictures in legacy intranets and forums. When a notice says “10 KB to 20 KB”, aim near the top of the range rather than the bottom.
Tips for clear photos at small sizes
- Sign larger than usual on white paper with a thick black pen; bold strokes survive small pixel sizes, thin ones break up.
- Photograph in daylight from straight above, then crop right up to the ink.
- For a photo at 10 KB, crop to face and shoulders only; a full upper body leaves the face too small to recognise.
Troubleshooting
- The result is only about 250 px wide. That is the honest size for 10 KB. If the form allows 20 KB, use Compress image to 20 KB for a visibly sharper file.
- The portal wants “minimum 10 KB”. Then this target is too low; pick a range such as 15 or 20 KB so you land above the minimum.
- Grey, blotchy background around the signature. Shadows on the paper compress badly. Retake it in even light or crop closer.
- Exact pixels required (e.g. 140 × 60). Resize to those dimensions first; this page controls bytes, not a fixed pixel box.
Questions and answers
How do I compress an image to 10 KB?
Crop it first, then drop it on this page with the target set to 10 KB and press Compress. The converter lowers JPG quality, and if that is not enough, reduces the pixel size step by step until the file is under 10,000 bytes. The result line tells you the quality, dimensions and exact size, so you can check it before uploading.
Can a photo really be 10 KB and still look clear?
Clear enough for a small on-screen thumbnail, yes, if it is cropped to the face against a plain background. It will be a few hundred pixels wide, so it won’t look good printed or enlarged. A busy background or a full-length photo at 10 KB looks blocky, which is why cropping is the main thing you control.
Why is my 10 KB signature blurry?
Usually because the original had too much empty paper around it, so the signature itself ended up only a few pixels tall after shrinking. Crop to the ink, use a darker pen, and try again. If the form permits it, a 15 or 20 KB target gives noticeably crisper lines.
