Fit an application photo under 30 KB with the face still sharp enough for a person to verify.

Thirty kilobytes is a typical photo ceiling on application forms that give the signature its own, smaller limit. At this budget a head-and-shoulders portrait keeps clear eyes and facial features, usually at 400–600 px wide depending on the background. This page compresses JPG, PNG, iPhone HEIC, WEBP and AVIF to at most 30,000 bytes: quality first, dimensions only if needed. Add the photo and the signature together and set a separate target for each run.

How to compress an image to 30 KB

    1. Pick a recent photo with a plain light background and crop it to head and top of the shoulders.
    2. Drop it here and set the target to 30 KB; leave “Keep date taken” off unless the form needs it.
    3. Compress, check that the face is sharp at 100% zoom, and download the JPG.

What happens to quality, size and metadata

With 30 KB the quality search often finds a setting in the 60–80 range for a well-cropped portrait, so the pixel size can stay larger than on the 10–20 KB pages. If the photo includes a lot of patterned background or noise from low light, the engine scales it down in 15% steps until the best quality fits.

The saved JPG is at most 30,000 bytes, which also stays under 30 × 1,024 bytes. Orientation is baked into the pixels, the GPS location is removed, and a transparent background becomes white.

Where 30 KB is asked for

Many Indian government recruitment notifications specify the photograph as 20–50 KB and the signature as 10–30 KB, so 30 KB works for either: the top of the signature range or a safe middle for the photo. State police and teacher eligibility tests, public-sector bank and insurance recruitment, and some university admission portals list exactly “photo up to 30 KB”. Some passport-photo and student ID systems abroad also use small limits around 30 KB for online thumbnails. Notices often add a pixel size (for example 3.5 × 4.5 cm at a given resolution) and a date-of-photo rule, so read them fully.

Tips for clear photos at small sizes

    • Face the light, not the window behind you; a dark face on a bright background wastes bytes and fails human checks.
    • Wear clothing that contrasts with the background, so the outline stays clear after compression.
    • Don’t use a photo of a printed photo: paper texture adds noise that eats into the 30 KB.

    Troubleshooting

    • The portal shows a blurred preview. Some portals display uploads scaled up. Check the downloaded file itself at 100% zoom instead.
    • Rejected because of dimensions. Resize the photo to the required pixel size first, then compress it here.
    • The background looks blotchy. Uneven walls compress badly; stand in front of a plain, evenly lit surface.
    • A low-light phone photo. Night noise doubles the bytes needed. Retake it in daylight.

    Questions and answers

How can I compress a photo to 30 KB on my phone?

Open this page in your phone’s browser, tap the box and pick the photo from your gallery or Photos. Set the target to 30 KB and press Compress. The work happens on the phone itself, so nothing is uploaded. Save the JPG to your downloads and attach it from there in the application form.

What resolution is a 30 KB photo?

There is no fixed answer; it depends on the content. A tightly cropped face on a plain background can stay around 500 px wide at 30 KB, while a detailed photo has to be smaller. The result line shows the exact pixel size, so you can compare it with what the form requires.

Can I compress my photo and signature to 30 KB together?

Yes. Drop both and each file is compressed separately to its own best quality under 30,000 bytes. If the signature has a lower limit, such as 20 KB, run it again with that target, or use Compress image to 20 KB for the signature only.
